More than 25 years ago, Jeanetta was an ex-high school teacher staying at home giving extra and remedial lessons. During this time, Jeanetta stumbled across the Kumon programme and has never looked back. With her training as a high school, remedial and special education teacher the Kumon programme fitted her like a glove. Jeanetta started her centre with humble beginnings, around a dining room table to a garage and then opened the doors of one of the biggest centres in the world – Kumon South!

The Kumon South centres have separate study areas with dedicated staff members who specialise in instructing students in each area. Our dedicated staff are continuously trained to instruct students to achieve their own personal best.

At Kumon South, the sky is the limit. The fact that the programme focuses on developing every child’s full potential and caters for students who range from having problems with learning to students who are highly gifted, fits Kumon South perfectly. We acknowledge the fact that each of our students are individuals with their own needs, abilities and goals and we work with them accordingly.

In addition to the different learning capabilities, we also cater for all ages at our Kumon South Centres. The variety of students that we cater for has been our main strength throughout the years.  Kumon South’s performance and results over the past years have been mind boggling and nothing short of amazing. Based on the results we have achieved with our students, we have been awarded the title of the only Maths & English Elite Centre in Africa!

Our goal is to keep making positive changes in children’s lives and that includes every single child that crosses our path. We adjust the programme to suit each child and their circumstances. Kumon becomes a team effort between our team, the student and their parents; The Kumon South family!

About the Instructor

My Name is Jeanetta Taaljard and I am the Instructor of the Alberton, Randhart and Kumon South Study Centres. My journey with Kumon began in 1995. I had previously taught at high school level but at the time, I was at home with my own children, completing my post graduate studies in remedial and special education. Whilst completing my studies, I was assisting many of the neighbourhood children with their school studies and I found that many of them struggled with Maths and English language. Kumon had extensive and well researched maths and English programmes and a student would want to excel in their Maths and English studies.

What I truly love about the Kumon programmes is that it is a system of worksheets that have been created in a way that they are suited to each child's abilities. Kumon is for every student; from the weakest to the strongest and from the youngest to the oldest – this is what I wanted for my students!

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
