About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
Amanzimtoti Study Centre opened its doors in 2018. The centre is located at the Toti Oasis, on the same premises as the Caltex garage.

Conveniently located close to schools and easily accessible from the highway, the centre is a child friendly location with plenty of safe parking. The convenience store at the petrol station makes extra trips for essential or last-minute products unnecessary. A coffee shop in the premises is a convenient place for parents to relax while they wait. The centre is also located close to malls.

All ages are welcomed with warm smiles and open arms to this centre where the first aim is to make students (and parents) feel comfortable. Initially, the Instructor will determine what each new student can comfortably do. This level of skill will be built on and developed at a pace that is individually suited to each student. One of the aims of the Kumon programmes is to develop the student’s self-study ability. As such, in the beginning students will receive plenty of focused attention and facilitation, after which the Instructor will gradually allow students to complete work independently, though constant monitoring will continue.

Amanzimtoti Study Centre is a place that students will look forward to coming to. They will grow personally, learn independently and advance beyond grade level in a relaxed and happy way that will leave everyone smiling.

About the Instructor

My name is Desireé Austin, Instructor at the Amanzimtoti Study Centre.

The idea of becoming a Kumon Instructor began when my aunt mentioned to me that, given the fact that I have always enjoyed maths and truly adore children, it would be a very worthwhile path for me to pursue. At the time I was a stay at home mom with my toddler girls’ best interest at heart, and as such felt that my girls needed me to be available for them during the afternoons.

Not long after that I became a Kindermusik educator. As a person who enjoyed music, I had no doubt about the amazing affect that music has on the brain development of young children. It was a teacher, at one of the schools I gave Kindermusik classes to, that further promoted Kumon to me by regularly mentioning how well her child was doing and what it had meant to them.

Now that my girls are starting out their school careers I have seen the battle that they have, keeping up with all their school work and experiencing the frustration with maths in these, their early years. I realised how important a good foundation is to equip them with the skills to continue without fear. I started thinking about their future and how I could help them. I found myself contemplating a change in my life.

I started finding out about opening a Kumon Centre of my own. The more I learned about Kumon and the philosophy behind the system, the more excited I became at the prospect of being able to facilitate children to become their best possible self. During training, I became increasingly excited about the program.
Though I had always seen myself working with animals and this is very far removed from Agriculture, my chosen field of study, seeing how Kumon changes the lives of children every day, all over the world, has confirmed to me repeatedly that I am in the right place.

I truly believe that Kumon is the best gift any parent can give their child. I am overjoyed at the opportunity to be involved in something that is so amazing, and at the prospect of helping children develop to their full potential.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
