Kumon Blairgowrie was established in 1998 by Megan Warren. From a modest start in one renovated classroom, the centre has flourished and grown over the years, now comprising of four spacious classrooms. Children aged from three to eighteen years old attend this vibrant centre. The furniture throughout the centre is designed to meet the needs of the various age groups from pre-school tables to high school style desks. There is ample parking overseen by our car guard, and seating outside the classrooms for parents and minders, with WIFI access.

A team of ten dedicated assistants ensure the smooth running of the Blairgowrie centre. There is a purposeful and efficient atmosphere at the centre in which the various age groups complete their Kumon worksheets and supplementary activities. The aim is to develop the students’ ability to complete an appropriate amount of work with good concentration and accuracy as they progress through the Kumon programmes, and ultimately to study material above their school grade with ease and independence. The centre strives to develop happy, confident students in an atmosphere conducive to learning and personal growth.

About the Instructor

Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to be a teacher. As soon as I left school, I attended university to pursue this dream. Working with children and teenagers is my passion. I will never forget the excitement as I approached the classroom on my first teaching day after I qualified. I knew that I had chosen the right profession. After many years of teaching, I came across a child who showed remarkable progress in class. This child told me that she was ‘doing Kumon’! That very day I found out all that I could about Kumon. It was not long before I arranged an interview with Kumon Head Office staff. Kumon was still very new in South Africa but even in the short time that Kumon centres had been operating, Kumon had already established a good reputation. I knew I had found an answer to many of the problems experienced by teachers with large classes and demanding curriculums – individualised study.  I knew that I wanted to be a Kumon instructor.

The passion from the Kumon Head Office staff in pursuing the potential of children matched my ideas completely and so, I embarked on my career as a Kumon Instructor in 1998. One of the most motivating aspects of being a Kumon Instructor is that one never stops learning as an educator. One can never say, ‘I have finished learning’; there is always more to learn. Our key teachers are the children themselves. There are ongoing changes in my centre as the children continue to amaze me. It is not uncommon to find young primary school children studying high school material with relative ease. Pre-school students continue to exceed my expectations by becoming fluent readers before Grade one. Helping to build confidence and a love of learning in children fuels my passion for education.

Being part of the international Kumon community motivates me further. Discussing children and the Kumon worksheets with Instructors from all over the world at international conferences has been especially rewarding. We live in a global village and I feel that it is vital to understand trends and successes in other countries. There is still much to learn from pursuing each child’s potential in my centre through the Kumon worksheets. Each day I look forward to seeing the children at my centre as they grow and achieve.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
