About this centre

Kumon Broadacres has the privilege and pleasure of serving the Broadacres community. We are proud of an established track record of excellence.

The centre has been running for many years, however, I took over as Instructor in 2012 with 18 students. Today it is a successful and thriving centre. This growth has been no accident; it’s been achieved through the reputation that the students have established at their schools for excellence in the classroom.

Under my leadership, the five dedicated and enthusiastic assistants working at the centre have established a warm and nurturing environment in which students, ranging in age from three to nineteen, are made to feel proud of their achievements. We provide an individualised approach to study where students are assigned work suitable for their specific level of ability. This means that we can help children of all ages and abilities achieve their full potential.

The centre operates from a classroom at Crawford Preparatory School in Fourways (200m from Cedar Square Shopping Centre). We have separate sections for our early learners, Maths and English students. Supplementary activities assist in reinforcing skills learnt during class. As reading is an integral part of the English programme, we have a library with books from the Kumon Recommended Reading List for the English students to enjoy.

There is a sunny courtyard outside the classroom where parents can wait for their children. They can also relax and enjoy snacks at the Crawford Café. Ample secure parking within the school grounds is available.

About the Instructor

My name is Leslie Mackenzie. Blessed with a passion for teaching, I qualified as a teacher in 1977, majoring in Maths and Physical Education. I have enjoyed teaching at schools in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. My Kumon journey started as an assistant where I got to know the Kumon method. I was immediately impressed with the individualised approach to learning and decided to open my own centre. Since taking over the Broadacres Kumon Centre in 2012, I have worked to maintain a learning environment that is dedicated to developing students to become self learners. The ability to self-learn includes the development of independence and confidence and enables students to take responsibility for their own learning.

As an experienced maths teacher, it inspires me to see students achieving their potential.  Students work on their own on carefully selected exercises, just within their comfort zones. As an Instructor, I continuously raise the bar for them, encouraging them to become independent thinkers. Making students aware of their progress and delighting in it, are key factors in their and our success. We work hard to make students feel confident of their capabilities. Once a specific skill has developed in a student, it is used to nudge their individual capabilities towards continuous improvement. Once the students have recognised their potential, they will have discovered their inspiration for success. We strive to produce students who display the life skills needed to serve them throughout school and beyond.

Attending local workshops, voluntary study groups and conferences both here and in Japan, has enabled me to learn and grow as an Instructor which in turn has helped me develop my instruction skills to the benefit of my students.

My Kumon experience has been extremely rewarding and I take delight in nurturing and encouraging my students so that they become “sound, capable people and thus contribute to the global community” ~ the Kumon Institute of Education Mission Statement

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
