The Kumon Bryanston Study Centre which opened in 1994, is a successful and well established centre. The many students who have passed through its doors have all benefitted from studying on the Kumon programmes.

The centre operates from the Knowledge Base at Bryandale Primary School, but does not cater solely to Bryandale students. It also attracts students from surrounding schools such as Kings School, Brescia, St Stithians and Bryanston Primary, to name just a few.

The centre consists of 2 spacious classrooms. One is used mainly for early learners and English students and the other is for Math students. It is easily accessible with adequate parking and signage. It is across the road from Bryanpark Shopping Centre so parents can shop, have coffee or go to gym while their children are at the centre. If they prefer to wait at the centre, seating is provided in the quad outside the centre. We offer a safe study environment, where students grow and blossom with the help of experienced and hard-working assistants.

Our focus at the centre is on the child. There is no limit to what a child can achieve, so we encourage a love of learning and instil students with confidence and skills to tackle new challenges for themselves. We aim to nurture them to progress beyond the international curriculum level for their age.

About the Instructor

My name is Lorraine Rodda. I have been a Kumon instructor since 1994 and was very proud to receive my 20-year Long Service Award in 2014. I am a qualified High School teacher, but felt that the school system did not provide an adequate foundation for some students. I was sure there had to be something better.

I started working at a Kumon centre in 1993 soon after Kumon was introduced to South Africa. I loved the structured way of learning and the fact that students could work at their own pace. I was amazed at the impact that practice, repetition and focus on mastery had on their skills, abilities and confidence. It provided them with a solid foundation and I, of course, was sold on the programme. I was very excited to open my own centre, which has grown to nearly 200 students and is thriving.

I take my role as a Kumon instructor very seriously. I aim to give every child the best I can, ensuring that I continually grow and develop as an Instructor. I take part in voluntary study groups and attend local meetings, workshops and conferences. I have served on the IAC (Instructor Advisory Committee) for 2 years and have been invited to participate in international conferences as an Elite Instructor in the Kumon Europe and Africa regions. I have nurtured students to completion of the programmes and do my best to learn from my students at every opportunity.

Many students, past and present (including my own children) continually testify to how the life skills and discipline that Kumon instils, has helped them so much, not only at school, but in their tertiary studies, their lives and at work. Through being exposed to Kumon at my centre, two of my assistants and one of my Kumon parents now run their own successful Kumon centres.

Kumon is an effective way to learn. Not only does it improve literacy and numeracy skills, but gives invaluable life and work skills too. It is so rewarding to watch a child grow in their abilities and confidence as they work through the programme and I feel privileged to be able to witness this and proud to make a difference in their lives and their learning.

How long does study take?

Study takes around 30 minutes per subject a day, depending on age and level of the work. Currently, study may be In-Centre and/or at home with online or messaging support.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
