About this centre

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The Chatsworth Study Centre was established in 2003 by veteran teacher and school principal, Krish Govender.

Based on his extensive experience as an educator, Krish maintains a calm, disciplined environment in which students can learn more effectively. He firmly believes in the value of setting clear boundaries and expectations, particularly for young learners, and the educational benefits of developing reading and numeracy skills as soon as possible. This provides a foundation for students to excel not only at school, but opens the door for lifelong opportunities.

The Kumon Maths and English programmes are designed for all ages and abilities, and Krish welcomes students from pre-school to high school.

The Kumon Chatsworth team has a high assistant to student ratio, with the Kumon English programme overseen separately. This hands-on approach provides students with as much assistance as they need to complete the day’s worksheets smoothly and to be able to correct their work while it is still fresh in their minds.

The Chatsworth Study Centre is situated in Fairhaven Primary school, mere minutes away from the Higginson Highway.

Krish offers personalised service to Kumon families, and to ensure that your child has the Instructor’s undivided attention, a parent-free zone is maintained during centre time. Parents are encouraged to speak to the Instructor after hours to discuss their child’s progress.

About the Instructor

I am Krish Govender, the Instructor of the Chatsworth Study Centre in Woodhurst.

I have been a maths and accounting educator for over 30 years and now serve the Chatsworth community as a school principal.

I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2003. At first, I saw Kumon only as a way to enhance the maths ability of students after school, but over the years I have developed a much deeper appreciation in the intelligent, careful design of the Kumon Method. By instilling work skills in students early on, students can fulfil their potential without negative experiences or developing bad habits.

In addition to seeing students achieve better school results, I have experienced the joy of seeing children who started with difficulties progress beyond their own expectations. I believe that if every student in South Africa has access to Kumon, we could have world class learners with access to better study and job opportunities.

I look forward to helping your child achieve lifelong success through Kumon.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
