About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
Welcome to KUMON BERGVLIET!  We operate from 6 Princess Road, Lower Bergvliet (off Main Road near Ladies’ Mile Road).
Pre-Covid it was the Constantia Centre, but we recently needed to relocate as the Constantia classrooms were no longer available.

Our students come from several schools in the area and slightly further afield in the southern suburbs.  The ages of students currently enrolled range from 4 to 14 years.

The Instructor and assistants are on hand in class to offer support and encouragement.  There are assistants dedicated to working with the younger students, up to and including Grade 2, with no more than two students per assistant. The Instructor is responsible for the students from Grade 3 upwards. Through the positive and encouraging atmosphere in the centre, the team works towards developing the confidence and skills of every student. New students very quickly become familiar with the centre routine.

While communication between the Instructor and parents is essential, this cannot happen during centre hours as all the focus is on the students.  Parent/Instructor communication takes place via email, Whatsapp messages or phone calls.
The instructor is also available for in-person meetings with parents, by appointment.

About the Instructor

I am Brenda Lawrence and I am the Instructor at KUMON BERGVLIET.
I trained and taught at the primary school level for several years after which I worked as a Personnel and Training Officer for a large retail company.  When my children were still very young I studied part-time to upgrade my teaching qualification, Maths is one of my majors.  I then returned to the classroom.
I first came across Kumon when my sister enrolled her three children in 1996.  Kumon was then very new in South Africa.  I immediately realized its immense value.
Since joining Kumon in 1997 I have come to realize that, during my years as a primary school teacher, I had seriously underestimated the potential of most of my learners.  As long as I followed the syllabus for each grade and spent extra time helping the ‘slower’ learners, I (and everyone else) believed everything was fine.  How wrong I was!
Kumon starts the students on a level where they are comfortable and then journeys with them and guides them, through their worksheet study, to master the skills required for their school grades and beyond.  This makes my work so enjoyable and satisfying.
I understand that by enrolling your child you are placing enormous trust in me and I take that responsibility very seriously.  We will work together as a team so that we can all share in your child’s progress
It is a pleasure for me and my assistants to witness our students gaining confidence and mastering new skills.  We are so proud of them and it is a privilege to be able to work with them.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
