The Kumon Durbanville study centre is a relaxed and child friendly open plan centre where children of all ages and abilities can come to develop all of their potential and abilities.

At the Durbanville study centre it is believed that encouragement and motivation plays an important part in developing every child to their full potential. The centre has assistants that have worked at Kumon for many years, and who therefore have worked with children of different abilities and varying personalities.

At Kumon the aim is to develop independent self-learners. This is achieved by motivating and encouraging all pupils into believing that they have potential and the ability to achieve great academic skills. The children’s work skills are developed so that they have the capacity to work on their own, whether it is Kumon or any other school subject that they are doing.

The Durbanville study centre has a library for the students in order to encourage a habit and love for reading in all of the pupils. The library contains books that are suitable for all ages so that even the youngest ones can develop a love for reading.

About the Instructor

My name is Pieter van der Merwe, and I am the Instructor at the Durbanville study centre. I am passionate about developing people and seeing people develop the potential that is within them. I believe that the Kumon program is more than a well-researched Math and English program. I believe that it is a skills development program that teaches children independence, self-discipline, a strong work ethic and self-confidence. Through the Kumon program I am able to encourage children to become well-rounded individuals that will have the confidence to dream big and to follow those dreams.

As a Kumon Instructor I believe that every single student has potential. I believe that every child has the ability to develop this potential to the fullest and I believe that it is my responsibility to draw that potential out of every child through skills development and motivation.

I am aware of the serious need for education to be individualised. Kumon gives me the opportunity to meet every student’s individual need and to develop their skills from there. I truly enjoy working with students of all abilities and I thrive on bringing the best out in them.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
