The Kumon Langebaan Study Centre has a long history, starting in Langebaan Weg in 1999, then relocating to Langebaan, and today the centre is conveniently located across from Laguna Mall in the Seeskulpie Educational Development Centre. The centre is an open plan, child friendly area. 

Kumon is a unique programme that develops children’s work skills in an individualised way so that they have the ability and confidence to work on their own, not just with their Kumon studies but in all subjects. The Instructor and assistants believe in nurturing students to be independent self-learners, by motivating them to have confidence in their own ability.

We have a dedicated pre-school area, and our students range from pre-school to high school learners.  The centre also has a library to encourage children to develop a love for reading. All students have access to the library during centre time.

We welcome students of all abilities and strive to develop them to their full potential through the unique Kumon method.

The centre is in a safe environment with ample parking for parents who wait for their children.

About the Instructor

My name is Sonette van der Merwe and I am very excited to be the Instructor at the Langebaan Kumon Study Centre. Having been a Kumon parent myself, I know the true benefits of the Kumon Programme.

I started my Kumon journey in 2003, firstly as a Kumon parent to my pre-school daughter, and soon all three my children were doing Kumon. They are all grown up now but are still reaping the benefits of this daily study method.

In 2005 I became a Kumon assistant and I could truly see the benefit the programmes had on all the children in the centre. When I got the opportunity to become a Kumon Instructor I was thrilled as my passion towards my students and mathematics has just grown in the past years. I am a great believer in skills development, and with the small steps in the Kumon Programmes, the children are given many opportunities to succeed.  We believe in motivating by celebrating these small victories. With daily study at the just right level it truly develops each student to become independent and confident self-learners.

I am myself an avid reader and as such I recommend reading to all my pupils, regardless of whether they are doing the Maths or English Programmes. No one can become a true self learner without the love of reading. The centre has a library with Kumon recommended reading books for the students to read.

The Langebaan Kumon Study Centre has a long and valued history and I am humbled to be able to continue to build on that.

I strive to never stop learning and to continue to learn from each child that I instruct.

How long does study take?

Study takes around 30 minutes per subject a day, depending on age and level of the work. Currently, study may be In-Centre and/or at home with online or messaging support.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
