About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
The Mokopane Centre was established in 2001 by Fatima Tayob, the previous instructor, and has now been taken over by Khadija Abdul-Ganie who has been an assistant at the centre for over 15 years.
Kumon has become synonymous with good education and enhanced skills.

The location of the centre makes it accessible to learners from most schools in and around the area. In addition to this, it is a child friendly safe environment with security, a designated entrance, sufficient parking and an outdoor waiting area for parents.
Currently at the centre, students are aged between four and seventeen with varying abilities.
Students are assigned to time slots to ensure effective learning and instruction. Furthermore, the layout of the centre is conducive to learning and ensures that learners are not easily distracted.
A separate day is assigned to pre-school learners who require individual attention. In order to improve the reading fluency, pronunciation and expression of second language speakers, a separate area is provided. This is where supplementary activities such as flashcards and listening exercises are conducted.
Online classes are offered to those who cannot attend physical classes for various reasons.
Newly enrolled students are closely monitored to ensure that they are familiarized with centre flow as well as study skills unique to the Kumon Method, progressing at their own pace.

An additional consideration is that the centre accommodates students of varying abilities, those who are high achievers, students from disadvantaged communities and students whose first language is not English. Our approach and interventions have to be mindful of this diversity and deal with each group individually.

The Mokopane Centre is overseen by instructor Khadija as well as her team of 4 assistants. Each assistant is assigned a maximum of five learners at any given timeslot. This ensures effective instruction in terms of feedback, observation, goal setting, marking and correcting.

About the Instructor

My name is Khadija, I am an Aromatherapist, and I've been an assistant at the Mokopane Centre for almost 16 years.

My journey with Kumon began in June 2006 when I was approached by then instructor, Fatima Tayob, to join the centre as an assistant.
I was studying through correspondence/distance learning at the time and felt this would be an ideal part-time job. My passion for working with children and for the English language drove me to accept her offer.
Fast forward to March 2022 and here I am, Instructor at Kumon Mokopane!

I am very impressed by the simplicity of the Kumon methodology and by the discipline it instills in the learners. The acquisition of independent skills rather than teaching in the conventional sense, is what appealed to me most.
My passion for both subjects have grown even more over the years.
I find it extremely rewarding working with children, learning from them and witnessing the improvement in their skills as they overcome many challenges to become independent self-learners.

My personal motivation is the success I see in every child I instruct and I hope to nurture many more learners to reach their potential. If Kumon is able to improve the learning ability of any child, and I can be part of it, then it is for that, that I am truly grateful.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
