Welcome to the Olivedale Study Centre which has been in operation since 2011. The centre operates from a permanent venue and is open four days a week to accommodate as many children as possible. The atmosphere in the centre is very caring and kind and has a melodic buzz from students reading aloud to develop or improve their reading ability, and to encourage a life-long love of reading.

Kumon is a long term programme that helps develop confidence, mental agility and work stamina. Many of the students who have studied Kumon at the Olivedale Study Centre have seen improved school results and are developing skills which will benefit them for their life ahead. Studying Kumon is hard work but the staff at Olivedale Kumon are very pleased with the exciting results, which makes for happy students.

Students in the centre currently range in age from three to sixteen, but students of all ages and abilities are allowed. The centre team includes Monique Broude, the Instructor, and six assistants who support her in maximising the potential of all their students.

Monique and her assistants believe in celebrating all victories, however big or small, and strive to ensure that all the students develop a love for learning.

About the Instructor

My name is Monique Broude and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2011. When I finished school I qualified to be a foundation phase teacher, but did not go into this field until 18 years later when my calling resurfaced and I found Kumon. I loved it from the beginning. I have no children of my own but each and every child that comes to my centre is very special to me. Seeing “my” children develop through the Kumon programmes gives me absolute joy. Each child is different and Kumon has shown me how to develop them individually.

I have several students studying higher levels and I have nurtured two English completers. My purpose is to prepare all my students for their journey to university or life ahead through self-learning.

I am very proud of each of my students for putting in the hard work and effort to reach their individual goals and aspirations for the future.

How long does study take?

Study takes around 30 minutes per subject a day, depending on age and level of the work. Currently, study may be In-Centre and/or at home with online or messaging support.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
