KUMON CONNECT available
Did you know you can now study Kumon using digital worksheets? This study centre is proud to offer KUMON CONNECT. Click here for more details.

The Somerset West Kumon Centre is located at the NG Helderberg Church, close to De Hoop Primary School and the R44.
Students ideally attend class twice a week (at the Centre or online) for approximately 30 minutes per subject. Individually set work is completed on non-class days to reinforce concepts and to build critical skills.
Classes are not restricted by ability or age.
The friendly staff observes students, assesses progress, provides instruction, and gives support where needed to each student. The staff believes in praise and positive feedback and will always motivate and support learners towards developing their maximum potential.

The Centre strives to develop strong and independent learners through individualised, advanced study and recognises the hard work of the students by holding award ceremonies twice a year.

About the Instructor

My name is Luanri Laynes and I am very fortunate to be the Kumon Instructor at the Somerset West Study Centre.

Having been a Kumon student myself, I know first-hand the feeling of self-doubt and anxiety when falling behind in school, and the impact it can have on your self-confidence. I also know what a big difference it makes to be able to develop your skills in a supportive environment with encouragement and guidance.

After completing my Law degree I became a Kumon assistant, and have not stopped learning from the children in the Centre since then. I could truly see the change in the students’ confidence and ability from day one. What a joy to see their faces light up when they achieved a new goal or completed a new challenge they thought was impossible!

Becoming an Instructor was the obvious next step!

I am a firm believer in keeping a balance between academics and skills development, as one is just as important as the other. With Kumon we take a step back and observe your child to find their “just right” level, to give them the opportunity to develop skills at the same time, in small steps.

As Toru Kumon once said:“Children are born with unlimited potential. Every child can excel by developing his or her ability through study at the just-right level. That is the reason I say: ‘Give it a try! Or you will never discover your true potential.’”

I am extremely enthusiastic to show you what a difference the programmes can make in your child.

So let’s give it a try!

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
