The Kumon Westering Study Centre opened in 1997 and is a home-based centre situated midway between We Buy Cars (old Makro) and Malabar in Port Elizabeth.

At Kumon Westering students are guided to become all they can and should be.
Our students are encouraged to keep en eye on their goals so that they don’t see the obstacles. We have a library which enables us to promote a love of reading in all our students.

The centre is open three days a week and embraces students of all ages, cultures and abilities. The classes start on the half hour from 14:30 and on a Monday and Thursday we have an 18:30 class to accommodate our budding sportstars. Kumon Westering provides a friendly, supportive and safe study environment. We care about every student and push each student to deliver the best that they can. We expect a high level of parental commitment as we believe that behind every successful student is a supportive parent. Long term commitment, in excess of 7 years, is common at the centre.

Our centre assistants and markers are carefully selected and work alongside the Instructor, all striving to bring out the best in the students.

About the Instructor

My name is Michele Minne and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 1997. My desire to help students succeed, began many years ago when I was in high school.

I used to go to school very early in the morning to help my classmates with their Maths. I would give a lesson on the previous day’s work, answer questions on the homework that the teacher had given and give additional exercises to my friends. This continued into university where I succeeded in assisting a B.Com student, who had failed matric Maths, to pass Maths at university level and hence obtain his degree. The secret was practice! Today I have many more students and an excellent programme at my disposal but my motivation remains the same – I want to see students succeed and I firmly believe that with hard work, committed daily study and parental involvement every child can do just that.

I discovered Kumon in 1995 whilst searching for a programme that would assist in helping my extremely introverted son prepare for school. I wanted a programme that would nurture not just his ability but his confidence as well. I was so impressed with Kumon that it wasn’t long before I was assisting at the local centre and 1½ years later I opened my own centre. My daughter started Kumon shortly after that, at the age of 4 years. Both of my children studied Kumon Maths and English for more than a decade. As a result, I know first-hand just what a pivotal role parents play in the success of their child and that is why I insist on having on-board parents at my centre.

Maths and reading are my passions and I am privileged to be able to use both as I strive to help students of any age succeed.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
