The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The Queensburgh Study Centre was opened in 1998 by Karen Mayo, and remains a family-run operation. Both of Karen’s sons and their partners have been actively involved in running the centre, and all of her assistants are well trained to offer a hands-on, caring environment.

Karen’s daily goal is to give each student the opportunity to achieve 100% every day, so that they leave the centre happy and with a sense of accomplishment. Her long-term aim is to instil the study skills your child needs to work ahead of their grade level, making school easy and fun, rather than a daunting experience.

The three-way partnership between the Instruction team, parent and student is a vital component in developing a capable child who can cope with whatever comes their way. Kumon is for all ages and abilities, and the Queensburgh Study Centre accepts enrolments from students as young as three years old. Karen welcomes any child who is willing to put in the work, and any parent who is willing to support their child, regardless of their prior experience with learning.

The spacious venue is within walking distance of Parkside Primary School, and with easy access to Malvern Primary School and local pre-schools. The Malvern Shopping centre is also within close proximity to the study centre. There is safe parking within the Bowling Club premises, as well as a waiting area where Kumon parents can engage with and motivate each other.

Before I found Kumon, I had a traditional teaching career. My experience was varied and rewarding, and I had the opportunity to teach every grade from pre-school to matric.

Over time, I realised I wanted to have a more direct impact on my students’ future, so I started to look for an alternative to the school system. I was lucky enough to be mentored by a veteran Kumon Instructor, who was passionate about what she did and showed me that Kumon would give me the means to equip my students with the skills to cope with anything.

I became a Kumon Instructor in 1998, and opened my second centre two years later. Through all of my years as an Instructor, I am constantly amazed at how powerful it can be when you believe unconditionally in a child’s potential. I live by the philosophy, “My instructor believed I was smarter, so I was.”

The three-way partnership between the Instructor, parent and child has the ability to unlock your child’s potential through Kumon, and I look forward to starting this journey with you at the Queensburgh Study Centre.

 How long does a class take?
The time taken to complete a day's work may be around 30 minutes per subject. The study time is completely down to each individual and the level of the programme they are currently at.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
