About this centre

Kumon Sunnyside has reopened its doors with a new instructor.

Our center has been operational since 2007 and we believe that no student is too young or too old to learn good study habits. Our aim is to discover the potential of each student and help them develop into confident, positive, independent individuals using a tailored study plan just for them.

Classes are offered either online or physically in centre and our programmes aim to  allow students to study beyond their grade level with ease and purpose through the small steps that the programme provides.  The centre also has a growing library of the age appropriate recommended reading list to encourage the habit and love for reading.

The instructor has had the unique experience of being; a Kumon student, an assistant for many years,  as well as a qualified teacher that has seen the success of the programme in her own students.
Kumon Sunnyside offers a friendly and positive environment that welcomes students of any age and ability.  With observation and personalized planning every student is seen and recognized as individuals.

About the Instructor

My name is Carla Zastron, and I am an instructor at Kumon Sunnyside.

"Those who can; do, while those who can't; teach," is a comment that I wholeheartedly believe.  That is why I strive to enable any and all students to learn how to DO without needing a teacher.  After I graduated with my honours in English and Education, I learned that no teacher can ever teach someone to be self-disciplined or able to engage in self-learning, it is something that only the individual can discover for themselves.

I have worked with students of all ages for a long time, both as an assistant in Kumon and as a high school teacher.  In all that time I have perceived only one constant, and that is that students thrive when given the opportunity to learn for themselves and not for others.  I believe in helping students realize their own worth and potential through their own means at their own pace.

In my years as a teacher, I have seen the successes of students that apply themselves and how far they can climb with the help of Kumon, and how the program can improve study habits across subjects.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
