About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
The Lenasia, Signet Centre was established in 2009 by Instructor Zarina Essop who already had many years’ experience running a centre at another location.

The centre is situated at Signet Office Park which provides a professional environment in which your child can study Kumon. The Lenasia, Signet Study Centre caters for children of all ages and abilities and has students ranging in age from four years old to adults.

Our library is open to our Maths and English students and is stocked with Kumon recommended reading list books as well as further reading and research books which our students can borrow to enhance their reading and comprehension abilities.

We have six assistants who are passionate about working with children and who continue to pursue their own potential and that of our students by attending regular training. Thus they effectively support our students’ development.

About the Instructor

I am Zarina Essop and I have been a Kumon Instructor for 27 years.

My experience as a Madressa (vernacular class) teacher and my training in preschool education and early childhood development enabled me to become a locum teacher at our local schools. I have a passion for education, and after seeing the benefits my own children gained from their Kumon study, I found my niche as a Kumon Instructor.

As a parent, I was involved in my children’s education and became chairperson of their school governing body. This enabled me to keep abreast of the changes in education when South Africa became a new democracy. In subsequent years, I built a good working relationship with educators in my community. They have referred learners to us for enrolment and have also enrolled their own children at Signet.

I have served on both the Kumon Instructor Advisory Committee and Worksheet Advisory Committee. This, combined with continuous involvement in Kumon Voluntary Study Groups, allows me to learn and grow from my students and other instructors, nationally and internationally. Thus my staff and I continue to develop our instruction skills so that our students can benefit further.

It inspires me to observe students learning concepts at their own pace and being able to confidently grasp topics ahead of their school grade level. This enables them to excel at school. The fact that students become disciplined, are able to learn task completion and goal setting skills is what encourages me to nurture more students to completion.

Our Programme Completers, in turn, give back to our community at Awards functions, Potential Completer Seminars and Open Day events when they are invited to share their Kumon experience and how it has shaped their lives at tertiary level and beyond.

Toru Kumon’s vision to make students smarter resonates with my passion for pursuing the potential of every student at our centre.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
