About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
The centre is located at 30 Union Avenue, Lyttelton Manor, Centurion, 2nd entrance.  It provides a spacious and motivating learning environment for students of all ages, and offers a library that can be used by the students studying on the English programme. The centre is in a tranquil environment, contributing to a peaceful centre environment.

The study centre caters for students ranging from pre-school through to high school. Many students have been with the Lyttelton study centre for several years.

After completing a Kumon assessment, your child will begin on the unique Maths and/or English programmes, at an individually set starting point, providing a solid foundation for effective learning. As a Kumon student, your child will develop invaluable study skills and become an independent learner, in addition to studying an appropriate amount of work at home on a daily basis. Your child will attend the Kumon centre twice a week, either Mondays and Thursdays or Tuesdays and Fridays.

Kumon's long-term focus provides children with the self-assurance to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed.

About the Instructor

My name is Marean Kok and I was a Kumon instructor, running two centres before I moved to Canada. Both these study centres grew tremendously, quadrupling in numbers during the period I ran them. Upon my return to South Africa, I ran the Lyttelton study centre since May 2014, on behalf of the previous Instructor.

My working career was mostly as a software programmer and system process analyst in the business world. I then chose to homeschool our four children. They did exceedingly well, excelling academically, with 25 distinctions between them. In sport they represented South Africa and their provinces in multiple sport disciplines and attained numerous Provincial, National and International medals and top positions. They successfully graduated in Engineering and Computer Science, and attained excellent positions.

Now, it is my privilege to help the children in our community to excel in more than just Maths and English, enabling them to become winners as well.

Past experience has proven the benefits that Kumon brought children and it is therefore a delight to have taken over the Lyttelton study centre from February 2015, and I believe we can make a difference to every child joining Kumon.  It is a great pleasure to be part of a child's growth and long term development.

It is also a privilege to experience a parent's growing confidence, enrollment of siblings and word of mouth recommendations resulting in new students joining the Lyttelton study centre.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
