About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
During the nearly 30 years of the existence of the Vereening Risiville Study Centre, many children have excelled in improving their Math and English abilities. The development of positive attitudes towards learning and delightful personality changes are a common occurrence.

The ethos has always been to maintain a friendly, relaxed learning atmosphere in the Centre.

The earlier a child starts to study with Kumon, the better. A number of the “early starters” are now in Grade 3 and 4 and are able to tackle Grade 7 work. Others who have been attending Kumon at the Vereening Risiville Study Centre for a number of years, are studying work that is way above their school grade level and are leaders in their respective classes. The high school students are ever grateful for the “jump start” which they received through their Kumon study. There is also a significant change in the students who started their Kumon journey in later grades, who have developed the skills they needed to improve in their studies, they picked the fruit of their efforts.

Vereening Risiville Study Centre has a spacious shaded parking area that allows for a comfortable wait while the children are busy with their Kumon activities.

About the Instructor

My father Henri has been the instructor of the Risiville Study Centre for almost my entire life. When I was 9 my father became a Kumon Instructor, and I grew up as part of the Kumon family. I was homeschooled and had the opportunity to attend Centre often. Also, as a teenager, I started assisting in the Centre. I remember specific children who are now grown up and are well into their respective careers, and whom I had seen achieve degrees and careers which I thought would have been a stretch for them. Through their Kumon studies they have truly been able to achieve their dreams.
My journey with Kumon and my dad as an Instructor and teacher led me to decide upon teaching as my chosen career and I achieved my Bachelor's Degree in Education. As an educator, I realised that the lack in number concept and basic mathematical skills as well as a lack of the skills required to be a self-learner were some of the main reasons that learners struggled with Math and English studies in school. I also became aware that the reason learners often did not interpret the questions of a test correctly, was a lack of the ability to read with comprehension. I have experienced how diligent study and application of the Kumon method has changed this in students’ lives. I have seen firsthand for many years how Kumon addresses all the different skills needed to create a learner and develop the whole child.
Now that my dad has retired, it is such an honour for me to continue in his footsteps and take over the Kumon Centre that he has nurtured all these years. I am looking forward to seeing the same in every student that passes through my Centre.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
