About this centre

In-centre & Online Classes
The Brackenhurst Kumon Study Centre opened in 1998 and welcomes nearly 350 students every Tuesday and Thursday. Our students range in age from five-years to adults, as the flexible nature of the Kumon Method allows it to be individualised for all ages and abilities. It is the aim of Kumon to develop the potential of every student through building their confidence and developing their study skills by means of the maths and English programmes.

Our Kumon Centre is located in Roy Campbell Street. There is plenty of parking, and a security guard on duty to ensure the safety of children studying at the Kumon Study Centre. Jill Van Meter (Brackenhurst Kumon Instructor) and her team of 10 assistants, work together to provide an environment of study that encourages within each individual student a desire to learn, an enjoyment of learning, and the development of those skills which are necessary for success in higher levels of maths and English. Our Kumon Centre operates within an open-plan facility that allows Jill to observe all that is going on. Our energetic but studious centre provides a non-threatening and pleasant atmosphere for all.
Jill Van Meter (Bachelor of Science in Education) has served as Kumon Instructor in the South of Joburg for well over 20 years. She oversees her two centres with Katy (Bachelor of Science in Mathematics) who heads up the math section and Jessica (Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and English) who heads up the English section. Both Katy and Jessica have post graduate certificates in education as well as teaching experience.

Jill’s first introduction to the Kumon programmes was as a Kumon parent herself.  Jill, a qualified educator, was concerned about the time-consuming methods for learning basic maths skills that her young daughters were experiencing at school. So, she sought out the Kumon Maths Programme to give her daughters the tools needed to develop the ability to work efficiently and accurately within mathematics.

Being a Kumon parent allowed Jill the opportunity to discover the merits of the Kumon Method, which eventually led to her taking over the Brackenhurst Centre in 1998 as Kumon Instructor. She opened the centre at Brackenhurst Primary School in May 2012. Jill has realised that Kumon’s strength lies in the individualised nature of the programme and thus, Jill focuses on being a mentor to her students rather than a ‘teacher’. Jill has a vibrant personality, and her enthusiasm in the centre cultivates a sense of enjoyment and trust in her students.

During her 22 years as a Kumon Instructor, Jill has been involved in various Kumon professional development programmes such as study groups, international conferences and presentations. Jill sees herself as a life-long learner, and is always eager to utilize new methods of learning in her centre.

Most Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
