About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available

Kumon Bryanston East first opened its doors in 2007. The aim of the Centre is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where every student enters with enthusiasm and has a positive attitude towards self-learning. The Instructor and team strive to discover the potential of the students and together with the structured worksheets, careful instruction and goal orientated planning, develop that potential to the maximum. Following a free assessment the student will begin on the programme at an individual starting point, laying a solid foundation for effective learning.

It is the Centre’s aim that all the students’ feel each day that they have become smarter and more confident in their ability. Each student is developed according to their individual needs and level of understanding.

Kumon Bryanston East is situated in a safe and family friendly neighbourhood, within proximity to shopping centres, and has ample secure parking. The Centre is made up of an early learner section as well as a senior learning section, allowing all ages to enjoy the Kumon Programme. There is a reading section which allows students to discover new books and to ignite their love for literature.

The success of Kumon Bryanston East has always been as a result of the interpersonal relationships which are built between the Instructor and the students and their families. The Instructor and her  team pride themselves in developing long lasting relationships with the families and supporting them with every step of their Kumon journey, motivating and encouraging each student to reach beyond their grade level and to ensure their success in achieving their goals.

The Centre aims to provide the best possible service and the staff/team are always willing to go the extra mile.

About the Instructor

My name is Ulrike (Rikki) Vlok, and I am the Instructor for Kumon Bryanston East.

I have been working at Kumon since 2011. I started out as an assistant while I was studying and prior to that I was a Kumon student myself. I have worked in every capacity at Kumon Bryanston East, including as head assistant for many years. I have been with the Centre from the time it was in a single classroom to the spacious Centre we are in today.

I am truly passionate about the Kumon Programme, having seen the amazing results which our students have achieved over the years. Loving what I do makes me an excellent instructor and my passion is evident in the way I interact with my students.

The Kumon Programme is not only about teaching maths and English; it teaches life skills and a positive attitude towards independent thinking. For me, the most rewarding part of being an Instructor is seeing my students grow and achieve results they never believed where possible.

Toru Kumon, the founder of the Kumon Method said: “…believing you will be able to instruct better tomorrow by continuing to learn today. As a Kumon Instructor it is priceless to realise that you are unfinished and to always strive to improve.”

I am committed to always striving to be the best Instructor I can be by continuing to learn in the Centre every day.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
