About this centre

Kumon Buccleuch is situated at No 25 Twain Avenue, parallel to Pretoria Main road, right opposite Cell C in a secure property, and offers the Kumon Maths and English Programmes to the community.

The Centre’s vision is to have a nurturing environment that leaves a positive lasting impression on the students, parents and the community. This is achieved by providing a welcoming, happy, safe, and supportive learning environment that enables students to progress at an individual pace in line with their ability. Kumon Buccleuch aims to maximise the students’ potential so that they become enthusiastic self-learners with a positive attitude to study. This is achieved through Kumon’s individualised learning method that is carried out through consistent instruction.

Following a free assessment, your child will begin on the programmes at an individually set starting point, laying a solid foundation for effective learning. Their progress through the programmes will be tailored to their individual needs, ensuring your child continues to grow, achieve and develop life-skills. Through daily study of the unique Kumon worksheets, your child will strive towards studying above the international standard for their age, enabling them to realise their potential both at school and beyond.

The desire that the Kumon Buccleuch Team has for their students is for them to be well-rounded, capable individuals who can greatly contribute to the community as well as the global society.

About the Instructor

My name is Freda Chitalu Konie-Tembo.  I am a Chartered Accountant and I hold a master’s degree in Business Administration. I am a registered Mentor with the Oxford Brookes University as well as a registered Counsellor with the Council of Counsellors South Africa. I am also a former Sunday school teacher.

My first encounter with Kumon was through Kumon workbooks which I used for my children from a very young age. I could immediately see how the structure of the workbooks impacted on my children. It instilled independent learning in them. I realised later on, after delving into the full Kumon Programme and worksheets, that the workbooks were just the tip of the iceberg.

I’m passionate about mentoring and guiding people of all ages, with a strong focus on inspiring and motivating others to achieve their full potential. I believe my skills equip me as a Kumon Instructor. I take on the ‘continuous learning approach’ for myself in order to deliver consistent instruction to my students, to guide them to become focused and smarter, through working on a level that is just right for them.

I look forward to partnering with you to discover and unlock the potential of your child and to help them develop to the best of their ability throughout their Kumon journey.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
