About our centre

The Gonubie Kumon Centre offers educational support right at your doorstep. We have two locations to choose from:

1) Lilyfontein School - open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

2) Seafield Centre, Gonubie - Wednesdays and Saturdays

Currently we have students from age three to sixteen and from all over the Eastern Cape.

We have a staff of five that guide, challenge, observe, support, and encourage the learners that attend. We also offer supplementary learning such as reading, Kazu Cards and Number Boards that support the worksheets to develop Maths and English.

We have ample parking or nearby shopping opportunities while you leave your child in our capable hands.

Cobie Mattheus

About your Instructor

My name is Cobie Mattheus and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2016. With thirteen years' experience as a Kumon Instructor I am passionate about making an impact on our students' lives.

Since school I have had a love for Maths and English, even though English is not my home language. When I was approached to buy a centre, I was excited as I have worked with children since I finished school. I worked as a Youth worker and later studied in the areas of Maths and Psychology. My experience with children includes six years of teaching and various other projects. I believe my experience has helped me prepare academically, but also supports my role in understanding that there is more to a child than mere academics when we want to develop their skills.

As I mentioned, my journey with Kumon has been very rewarding. To see how a struggling little one gains confidence and ends up being top of the class is empowering to any person. Kumon has shown me how a child’s diligence can develop study to years ahead of their age, without being forceful or demanding. To be a friendly guide and showing the students that enjoying the everyday worksheets can achieve a great deal.

As a mother of both a seven and a ten year old I really appreciate the Kumon programmes. My youngest started Kumon when she was three and loves reading as a result. It is the most wonderful thing for her to say to Dad: “I got another 100% for my Kumon Maths today”.

My oldest has found that the repetition in Kumon enables her to know her bonds, multiplication and division and has boosted her confidence in class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
