About this centre

The Harrismith Kumon Study Centre, established in 2020, is easy to locate in King Street and is close to the majority of the schools in the area. The Kumon Programme aims to meet each child at the level at which they feel comfortable, and to assist them to become independent and confident learners that are able to solve problems and recall information quickly. The Harrismith Study Centre aims to help every child reach their full potential and achieve the best of their abilities. Children from as young as three years old and up until age 18 are catered for at our centre. With a young, energetic and enthusiastic Kumon Instructor the children will feel motivated to learn and explore their abilities through the Kumon Programme. The Harrismith Study Centre offers a safe learning environment and a pleasant atmosphere for all its students.
I am Elné Döhne, the Instructor of the Harrismith Kumon Study Centre. I have always adored working with children and enriching their lives. As a paediatric Occupational Therapist I have been able to pursue my dream of working with children and assisting them to achieve their goals and reach their full potential in all aspects of life. Through the Kumon Programme I am able to touch more children’s lives and help them become the best that they can be. Having been a Kumon student myself, I have experienced the benefits of working through the programme. I loved the independence and self-discipline I gained through Kumon. The Maths Programme cultivated a love for numbers and mathematics in me, and I wish to assist more children to develop that same love for both mathematics and learning. It is important to me to help children flourish and be happy. Through the Kumon Programme I can meet every child at their level and explore with the child what their capabilities and strengths are. It is important that we invest time in nurturing our children as they are the future of tomorrow. By helping them, they are able to pave the way to the bright futures that they all have and can achieve.

Most Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
