About this centre

The Horizon View Kumon Centre started operating in 2017. This centre operates from a commercial shop located in “The Village” shopping centre in Horizon View. There is ample parking and good security making it a very safe environment.

The Instructor, Stuart, has been trained in the latest Kumon methods and techniques, ensuring the best learning experience for our students.

At the Horizon View Kumon Centre we strive to discover the potential of each individual student and to maximise this potential by developing the self-learning skills of our students. The focus of the centre is on the educational development of each individual. We also strive to communicate this development regularly to our parents in a professional manner. The centre caters for students of all ages and abilities. The students improve their work skills and concentration ability. The staff are professional and students are made to feel welcome and relaxed in the centre.

The centre is located near the regional library and is a short distance from large public schools. Many pre-schools and after care facilities are in the neighbourhood. Parents are able to do shopping while their children are in class, or may wait in our waiting area at the centre.

About the Instructor

My name is Stuart Shillinglaw and I have had almost 40 years experience in formal school education. My last position was Principal of a combined school. This position has given me invaluable experience in the educational needs of children from pre-school to grade 12. I have realized from this experience that the formal educational system has many flaws and human potential is being lost in the classrooms. What excites me about Kumon, is that the method uncovers this hidden potential and develops it to the maximum. Also, Kumon concentrates on individualised instruction which is impossible in school classrooms.

My qualifications were in biology and science education. Over the years in education I have realised that the most important subjects are home language (English) and mathematics. These are the two subjects which students have to master in order to achieve university entrance into the major professions. Kumon uses these two subjects to improve the educational skills of students. Another area lacking in formal education, is the ability to self-learn. The main aim of the Kumon method is to develop the self-learning skills of students which is essential to cope in the modern world of diverse abilities. The system also encourages lifelong learning which is an important life skill.

My wife, Lesley, and I have been successful Kumon Instructors in the past and we are excited to be involved in the system again. We have witnessed incredible results in the past which makes us firm believers in the system. Our two sons participated in Kumon mathematics which gave them the ability to pursue professional careers that required studying university mathematics.

Watching how Kumon improves the concentration and confidence of students is truly rewarding. We find the Kumon method very stimulating and fulfilling.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
