About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available
The Kumon Centre in Kathu opened its doors in February 2021.  We believe that, because the Kumon programme is so uniquely designed, everyone, no matter age or ability, can benefit from it.

There is a saying that we think embodies our Centre: “How do you eat an elephant? Bit by bit” Well, we take this to heart and approach learning in the same way. We work to develop the necessary work and life skills through our programmes by first conquering the Maths & English-shaped giants (or elephants) in the lives of our children first. With a love for learning, together with focused instruction for each individual student and finding the 'just right' level, any student can easily advance beyond grade level at their own pace.

Kumon Kathu offers online instruction as well. This means that your child can learn at home can benefit from our programme even if you are unable to bring your child to the centre. It also means that if you are in a surrounding area like Kuruman, Postmasburg or Hotazel you can still enrol without the cost of travel.

At Kumon Kathu we believe that, just as the programme itself is unique, so is each student coming through our doors. We strive to develop each student according to their maximum potential, which we believe there is no limit to, to be independent, problem-solving and confident people.

About the Instructor

I actually started my Kumon journey when I was 11 years old. I actually insisted on starting when I saw a classmate of mine in Maths class just easing through the class work without a stress. I remember asking him how he can be so calm about this complicated division sum. He just simply replied "Because of Kumon".

When I started Kumon, I could easily sail through the first couple of worksheets because I started at a comfortable level for me. I gained confidence and motivation. I wanted the next challenge Kumon had to offer!

In 2008 I started assisting at a Kumon centre in Pretoria. Being an assistant for those nine years, taught me that Kumon really develops students beyond Maths and English.  It taught me invaluable life skills that I will carry throughout my lifetime. Assisting also showed me that anyone has the ability to do Maths or English, it is not for a selected few or the most talented of us but EVERYONE!  I wish to help others see this as well by developing their abilities through the Kumon programmes.

Knowing how much Kumon has helped me developed not only in my academic skill, but also with general skills in life, I took the opportunity in 2020 to pursue my dream of opening my own Kumon Centre so that I could help develop others - I can't wait to discover your child's potential!

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
