The Kumon Mayfair Study Centre was established in 2019.

Our aim at the centre is for every student to become a learner with a positive attitude towards studying. The unique methodology employed by the Kumon programmes enables us to develop the ability of your child to the maximum.

After a diagnostic assessment your child will begin at their own starting point. Our team of carefully selected and well trained Instructors and assistants will ensure that their progress is monitored and adjusted to suit their individual needs. This will ensure that your child will always be working at their appropriate level.

The Mayfair Study Centre is centrally located in premises above Khan’s Butchery. The entrance to the venue is located on the street level between Khan’s Butchery and Pizza News. Do your shopping in the area while your child is busy at the study centre. There is also an indoor parent waiting area should you wish to wait for your child. Your child is expected to be at the centre for approximately 30 minutes per subject.

All students enrolled at the Mayfair Study Centre (including those enrolled for maths only) will also be part of our Reading Programme. We have a library corner containing carefully selected books that supplement our Kumon English Study Programme.

At Kumon we always remember that every child is different. Your child will progress at their own pace as they work through the different levels, enabling them to achieve success. This achievement will assist in motivating them further.

We cater for students of all ages and abilities. Daily Kumon study in the early years of childhood helps to inculcate good study habits. A good work ethic in the formative years of a child’s life ensures that they are well prepared to meet and deal with the challenges that they will encounter in their future endeavours.
I’m Hajra Manjra and I’m the principal Instructor at the Kumon Mayfair Study Centre.

Over 20 years of teaching experience in both state and private schools has made me realise that every child is a unique individual with unlimited potential. As parents and educators, it is our responsibility to ensure that our children are provided with opportunities to realise this potential in a secure, nurturing environment, in which they feel confident about their individuality.

I started my teaching career at the tender age of twenty and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I am in a profession that provides me with immense personal gratification. The most enjoyable and fulfilling episodes of my teaching career was when I would see the faces of my pupils light up when they managed to grasp a new concept. Their achievements and success never failed to provide me with immense joy.

In 2008 and 2009 I received awards from the Gauteng Department of Education when my grade 12 students obtained the top matric results in the district.

My dedication and hard work secured me a principal’s position, in my early forties, at one of the top private schools in the area. Students of mine who were enrolled in Kumon from their pre and primary school years excelled in their academic achievements, not only at school but also at university.

I am sure that most parents would agree with me when I say that getting a child to focus and concentrate on something other than an electronic device is a mammoth task. Being a mother of four sons, including a special needs learner, I believe I fully understand the challenges that parents are faced with today.

Most Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
