About this centre

The Kumon Middelburg CBD Study Centre was established in 2005 by Instructor Retha Briggs.  Our aim is to develop each student’s potential to the fullest.

The centre offers a friendly environment where students work on their own level at their own pace.  Kumon Middelburg CBD Centre caters for children of all ages and abilities and has students as young as five years of age, right up to adults.  We have four separate study areas where learning takes place: an English room, a room for early learners and other supplementary activities and the other two classes which are used for Maths.

Our team of passionate and well-trained staff comprises Instructor Retha and 5 assistants who ensure that every student obtains sufficient attention on centre days.

The centre is centrally located in Middelburg.  It is situated in Huis Grundling on the premises of Laerskool Middelburg with ample free parking available.  It is close to town, making it convenient for Mom to do some shopping while our students excel in their maths and English.

Kumon Middelburg CBD Study Centre is looking forward to equipping your child with the necessary knowledge and skills to give them an excellent foundation for a great future.

About the Instructor

My name is Retha Briggs and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2005.  I am a teacher and teach various school grades.  I have an Honours Degree in Education. As long ago as I can remember I have wanted always to be a teacher.  I have a passion for education and for working with children.

While teaching I heard about Kumon and decided to find out more.  After seeing how the programme worked I was inspired to open my own centre in Middelburg.  It is truly a blessing for me to be part of this wonderful programme, to lead and to assist many students on their Kumon Journey to success.  Kumon is a journey of commitment where good Maths and English skills are our goal, but along the way students learn so much more.  They learn perseverance, to set goals and to work towards achieving those goals, time management, task completion, self- motivation, accountability for own progress, self-learning and self-confidence.  Being part of this journey with the students in my centre is an honour that gives me great job satisfaction.  To see a student grasp a new concept at their own pace and then to see them progress ahead of their school grade excites and inspires me.

The aim of the Kumon Middelburg Centre is to develop each student’s potential to the fullest.  I believe that through the Kumon programme, students can gain essential skills to reach their full potential and to assist them on their life path to become sound, capable people who can make a meaningful contribution to the communities in which they live.

“Our current hard work is for the brighter future of each student, each community and each country”. I fully agree with the statement of Mr Kazuomi Shibata (President, Kumon Europe and Africa).  It is a privilege for me to be a part of my students’ lives and also to be part of Kumon.  Kumon has become a major part of my life journey.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
