About this centre

At Kumon, our aim is for each and every child to become an independent, advanced learner, with a positive attitude to study.

The aim of the unique Kumon programmes is to pursue the potential of each child by developing their ability and nurturing their independence. Following an Enrolment Interview, your child will begin on the programmes at an individually set starting point, which provides him/her with a solid foundation for effective learning. Students’ progress through the programmes will be tailored to their individual needs to ensure continuous growth and achievement.

Though Pretoria has yielded many successful Kumon Centres over the years, research in and around the area revealed that Murrayfield in particular is home to an astounding number of talented children of all ages who, given the right platform and the right opportunities, are sure to reach heights beyond all expectations. Kumon Murrayfield is strategically situated at the heart of this untapped potential, with the aim of doing precisely that: providing these children with the ultimate platform to succeed – on both an academic and personal level.

Situated on Rossouw Street, just off the N4 Highway, Kumon Murrayfield is easily accessible to all families North and South of the Highway. It shares grounds with a Steers, A Total petrol station and a car wash, and is in close proximity to various nursery, primary and secondary schools, as well as grocery stores, shopping centres, and other means of occupying parents’ time while waiting for their children on Centre days. Parents who wish to wait at the Centre are welcome to do so, as ample parking and an in-Centre waiting area is available.

Despite its conveniently varied and inevitably busy surrounds, the premises constitutes a conducive learning environment with 24-hour security to ensure the safety of each child during Centre time. The Instructor and superbly trained assistant/s are committed to giving each child the individualised guidance he or she needs along the road to success, as well as to providing a nurturing, positive atmosphere for continued development.

Provided that arrangements are made in advance, all visitors are welcome at Kumon Murrayfield, where we seek to inspire and proudly share in the growth and development of each child.
For as long as I can remember, I have been extremely passionate about two key components of what inevitably shapes our future in this world: education and the youth.

After having completed under- and postgraduate qualifications in Psychology and English respectively, and two years of lecturing in English, I became increasingly aware of the frightening level of the academic performance of university students. What struck me the most was not necessarily how much the students were struggling, but more the fact that, in many cases, these were clearly sound, intelligent young people. I couldn’t help but wonder: where did things go wrong?

I am a firm believer in the fact that each and every individual is born with potential. I am also aware of the unfortunate reality that, too often, these individuals don’t get the opportunities they need to unlock that potential. Children are simply chased through the school system; they are deprived of the time they need to fully grasp concepts; they fall behind; and they stay behind. The result is inevitable: underprepared individuals at university level and beyond – not because these students don’t have the ability, but because they weren’t granted the time or attention they needed at that particular point in time.

Well, what a pleasant and welcome surprise when I discovered Kumon! The Kumon Method aims to discover and develop the potential of each individual child at a pace suited to his/her own ability. WOW!

From the day of my very first meeting at Head Office, I simply haven’t looked back. As an “all-in or all-out” type of person, I truly need to believe in what I do in order to be fully invested in it – even more so when working with children! Kumon certainly has made that easy and provides me with a platform to combine the two things I love most (education and children) to make a sustainable difference in children’s lives. I have such respect for the Kumon Method. Its focus on continued development through laying solid foundations and allowing sufficient practice, as well as the self-confidence, independent learning and other valuable life skills it nurtures, truly makes it the superior choice. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” These words, I believe, represent a profound truth and I am privileged to be a part of an educational system that values the child as a person, as well as his/her mind.

My road to becoming a Kumon Instructor began in May 2016, which means that I have a good many decades with Kumon ahead of me. Thinking of and planning the journey ahead is extremely exciting! I hope to inspire my students to be as energised and positive as I am about their futures; to have a vision for their lives, as I do. I cannot think of anything more rewarding than witnessing their growth, growing alongside them, watching them succeed and knowing that it is the result of their own hard work and dedication – I was simply there to guide, to encourage and to share in the pride and joy of their success.

I look forward to meeting with you and your children at Kumon Murrayfield, where we strive to unlock the limitless potential of each individual child!

Most Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
