About this centre

The Parkwood Study Centre strives to develop the ability of each of its students, by discovering their potential. This is accomplished through the careful planning and purposeful instruction of the Kumon Method. To ensure that the students receive maximum benefit, fully trained Kumon staff oversee their study in class. The aim for every class day is for the students to leave motivated and with a sense of accomplishment.

The Instructor and her staff do not believe in mistakes, but rather see these as opportunities to try again. The centre offers a friendly, welcoming environment where students are encouraged to progress at a pace uniquely suited to their ability. Weekly evaluation of the students work ensures that they are working at a level that is suited specifically to them.

The Instructor desires for students to develop a love for reading, and as such, the centre offers a reading area and a library service whereby students are encouraged to read and exchange books from the Kumon Recommended Reading list.

The Parkwood Study Centre is conveniently situated in the buzzing hub of Rosebank just off Jan Smuts Avenue, and is surrounded by a number of schools as well as great coffee shops for parents to take advantage of while their children attend Kumon classes.
My name is Jackie Stenger, and I have worked with children for the last 11 years, in many different settings and capacities. Whether it was as a tutor, therapist and educator, or in the role of an Area Manager at Kumon Education South Africa, every experience has had one goal: "Make a difference in a child's life".

After school I began the long journey to becoming a Clinical Psychologist and currently hold an honours degree. While studying I quickly developed a desire to cultivate the potential in children; my journey took a detour and I found myself more consumed with the field of education than that of Psychology. My interest in how the human mind functions, coupled with my need to nurture development in young children, led me on a road of both successes and challenges, but most of all a road of enlightenment that has proven to me over and over again that there is no limit to a person’s potential. This belief creates a passion within me to water the potential of young minds and help them to blossom into well-rounded, responsible, independent self-learners who will flourish as successful individuals.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
