About our centre

Welcome to Kumon Petersfield. A well-established franchise that has seen children move through their schooling journey and return with smiles to reminisce about their time at the centre or enrolling their own children decades later.

At Kumon Petersfield, there is no age restriction on learning. Starting early to learn through a playful platform or engaging in brain stimulating activity later in life, Kumon is ideal for anyone. Building foundations for learning, whether following the public school or private curriculum. The aim is for every child to become an independent learner, with a curious attitude towards gaining knowledge and encouraging problem solving. This Centre offers two English Programmes to our customers. One English programme is directed towards students whose home language is English, while the additional English programme is tailored specifically for students whose home language is not English. This programme introduces the English language to your child using carefully designed worksheets and audio activities, together with guidance by the Centre team. Through this programme your child will master the 4 essential language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening), developing confidence and success in a bilingual world.

A Kumon centre is an after-school enrichment program focused on self-guided Math and English learning. Every new student completes a free assessment to determine their exact starting point. Children work at a level tailored to their abilities, meaning they can fill in knowledge gaps or work far beyond their current school grade. The program uses small-step worksheets. Instructors guide students to find answers independently rather than simply teaching them how to pass tests. Students work for roughly 30 minutes per day at home for each subject, alongside their in-centre visits two days a week.

Danien Coetzee

About your Instructor

My name is Danien Coetzee, franchise owner at Kumon Petersfield. I passionately believe all children have the capacity to learn and grow and that it is my role as the instructor to provide the ideal environment and supply the appropriate material for the child to discover education as self-directed learning. I am very passionate in instilling a love of reading. My aim is to unlock potential in children where some feel limited or inspire to excel in existing abilities.

I have a qualification in Early Childhood education, specialising in Montessori. I have experience in education for four years and have been an assistant at the Kumon Petersfield franchise for three years. After retirement of the previous owner, I was the ideal candidate to take over. I would love to build a relationship with every child and help them grow into the best of their abilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
