About this centre

Kumon Potchefstroom opened its doors in 1995 operating from my home. Currently the centre operates on the premises of the Methodist Church in the centre of town.

Parents and students enjoy the tranquil, shady gardens surrounding the centre, in which there is a waiting area as well as ample parking. The centre’s layout is conducive to optimal learning and boasts a separate Early Learner section. My instruction activities are aimed at developing my students as a whole, giving regular feedback not only on students’ progress and goals, but on study skills as well. My parents are my partners in the truest sense, as we all have the same goal: the full development of each individual child.

Our students range between the ages of 4 and 17 studying Maths, English or both subjects.

At Kumon Potchefstroom we have 4 dedicated assistants who support me as the Kumon Instructor in developing our students to their full potential.

About the Instructor

Hi, my name is Jani Du Plessis, and I’ve been a Kumon Instructor since 1995.

I am still passionately involved in developing each individual child in my centre to become a confident, independent student and a capable human being. This I achieve through utilising the Kumon Programmes. Being an instructor is a role that I thoroughly enjoy as I love working with children and seeing them blossom through my input.

I used to be a teacher, giving extra Math classes for Matric learners. I always believed that there must be a system or programme better suited to addressing each student’s needs. Thankfully a family member, whose children were enrolled at Kumon, introduced me to Kumon. I did a lot of research before approaching the company to become part of this successful organisation and I am still as impressed with the Kumon Method to this day!

I always need to have a 100% belief in whatever I do and with my passion for children’s’ development, Kumon ticked all the boxes for me. From the day I joined Kumon, my respect for the programmes continues to grow. The learning principles, such as building a solid foundation, giving praise and encouragement, having sufficient practice and repetition, developing at their own pace and achieving good study skills are what make the programmes so effective.  I am so thankful that I am privileged to be able to work with all my students and that my supportive parents entrust their children to me. Every centre day feels like a reward as I see happy, confident students entering and leaving my centre.

What makes Kumon unique is the nurturing atmosphere in which each individual child is personally and systematically developed to attain the mindset required for successful, independent self-learning. Students experience the joy of advancing on their own and achieving success based on their own efforts. I truly believe that my students will continue learning by themselves when they are adults and will give their best in everything they do.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
