About this centre

The Kumon Rondebosch Study Centre is positioned in the heart of the Southern Suburbs. It operates from a permanent venue where learners work in a light, spacious and quiet space which leads on to a leafy patio where parents can sit and wait for their children to finish working. There is sufficient off-street parking for parents, as well as good security, and the centre is within walking distance from the Rondebosch railway station.

The Kumon programme is suitable for children of all ages and abilities and each student’s journey is unique. The Rondebosch Centre caters for students from pre-school up to senior high school level. The assistants at the centre all have more than 10 year’s invaluable experience with Kumon. They understand the philosophy of the programme and the content of the worksheets extremely well. They are also all parents themselves, and are comfortable working with children of all ages. The Instructor has many years of Kumon experience and is fluent in both English and Afrikaans.

About the Instructor

My name is Melissa Pike and I have been the Instructor at the Kumon Rondebosch Study Centre since 2009.

After matriculating in Pretoria and completing a Science degree at Stellenbosch University, I worked in Human Resources at a retail company for a number of years. After becoming a mother, I decided to work as a freelance tour guide, which gave me the opportunity to be a supportive and involved mother whilst still working and earning. After many years on the road as a tour guide, I was keen to find less stressful employment closer to home, and when the Kumon Rondebosch franchise became available for sale, I grabbed the opportunity.

At the Kumon interview and training I was very impressed with the Kumon method and the philosophy that supports the programme. I loved Maths and languages at school and I was really excited to pass on this sentiment. I was also looking forward to getting involved in the field of Education and to be working with children of all ages. I believed that I could take the centre and add value to the Rondebosch community.

Studying Maths at University has given me the confidence to instruct Maths at all levels. Being an avid reader has also helped me develop a love of the English language. In my guiding years I learned how important clear communication is. I often guided families with young children and this experience as well as being a parent myself has taught me a lot about children and child psychology. As an Instructor I use all of these skills on a daily basis.

The most rewarding aspect of being an Instructor is seeing how self-confidence improves in each and every student. Many students start off being timid and working slowly, and within a short time they are quick and accurate – their daily work has paid off and their Kumon journey is well on its way. I also find great reward in following each learner’s progress as I monitor their work each week. I enjoy regular communication with parents so that they have a clear picture of their child’s progress. Setting goals for each student is also an important part of their Kumon journey. It is very rewarding when the students show their school report results and you can see that Kumon has made a big difference.

My experience over the years as an Instructor has been very rewarding. Kumon really helps children of all ages not only academically, but also with their self-confidence and self-belief.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
