About our centre
Welcome to the Standerton Study Centre! We are proud to offer a supportive, inclusive learning environment for every child, regardless of age, ability, or cultural background. At the Standerton Study Centre, our mission is to unlock the full potential of each student by recognising and respecting that every child learns differently.
Your child will progress at their own pace, guided by our dedicated, well-trained, and caring staff who share a clear, goal-oriented vision for their success.
Using the Kumon Method, we focus on building confidence, study skills, and academic ability through our Maths and English programmes. We nurture independent learning by tailoring work to each child’s individual level. By first establishing strong foundational skills, students gradually become accustomed to self-learning before progressing to more advanced material.
Kumon students are taught how to learn from their worksheets, enabling them to study independently—often well beyond their school grade level. Our long-term approach fosters self-assurance, motivation, and a lifelong love for learning.
In addition to completing a carefully selected amount of daily work at home, your child will attend the study centre twice a week, where they will receive support and guidance tailored to their learning journey.

About your Instructor
My name is René van Aswegen, and as a parent of three beautiful children, I have often asked myself: How do I best prepare my children for the future? The world is changing rapidly, and the future demands young people who can think critically, solve problems creatively, manage their time effectively, and sift through vast amounts of information with confidence. More than ever, children need to be self-motivated, adaptable, and resilient, with the discipline to persevere through challenges.
When I enrolled my children in the Kumon Programme, I experienced first-hand how these essential life skills were developed alongside their Maths and English abilities. The Kumon Method, through its carefully structured worksheets and step-by-step learning approach, nurtures not only academic growth but also independence, confidence, and a love for learning.
As a teacher, I saw the urgent need for strong foundations in Maths and English—skills that are critical for success in school and beyond. I also witnessed how starting early gives children a powerful advantage. Through Kumon, I saw countless learners flourish academically and personally. This inspired me to become a Kumon Instructor myself.
I find the Kumon Method both stimulating and deeply rewarding. It is a privilege to guide students on their learning journeys and to witness the growth, confidence, and transformation that Kumon brings to their lives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
