About this centre

Our goal at Kumon Strubens Valley is to provide a safe, friendly environment for students to learn. We look at the ability of the individual student and engage them in an active process of learning in small, incremental steps that lead to self-confidence as they master the essential Maths and English concepts they need to succeed in school and in life.

With my team of assistants, we strive to provide the best learning experience for children of all ages and abilities, to develop crucial life skills and a positive attitude towards their studies.

During the lockdown, we supported students in their studies using various platforms and we continue to provide this support as necessary. Now that the lockdown has eased, our Centre has reopened and provides a COVID-19 compliant environment.

Your child will visit the Centre twice a week for about half an hour per subject for supervised studies. They will also receive an appropriate amount of work to complete on a daily basis. The Centre has number boards, multiplication tables and spelling activities to enhance the students’ daily work, with a library to encourage a love for reading. We communicate with parents regularly on their children’s development.

The Study Centre is a short travelling distance from numerous pre-schools, primary and high schools situated in the neighbourhood and is located near the Strubens Valley Library. There is ample parking available in the Strubens Valley Shopping Centre and it has good security. Parents can wait at the Study Centre, or can conveniently shop at Spar, grab a coffee at Wild Bean Café, or even exercise at Curves Gym!

We look forward to seeing you and your child soon at the Strubens Valley Study Centre!

About the Instructor

Hi, my name is Carla Selyer and I am the Instructor of the Kumon Strubens Valley Study Centre. I am a mother of two strong, educated women and it is my belief that educating both girls and boys is the best thing for the future of this country.

With a natural flair for languages, I have studied extensively and attained various advanced qualifications in French, Portuguese and Spanish. I have a Master of Business Administration, and have completed several other business and management courses. Having a love of learning, I am constantly challenging myself to learn new skills and expand my knowledge. More than that, I love encouraging others to learn and expand their own horizons and I have the opportunity to do just that in my Kumon Centre!

As a woman in business, I have worked both in the translation field, and as a language tutor, teaching English as a second language, as well as French and Portuguese. Prior to that I worked for various international organisations as a supervising officer and always enjoyed nurturing and coaching people in the achievement of their own life goals. I believe I have found my niche now in Kumon.

Going through the Kumon Programme myself has been enriching: it is a wonderful method to learn, building your ability gradually so that you can tackle advanced levels with ease.

Being a Kumon Centre owner, it has been rewarding to witness the transformation of children who come in lacking confidence in their ability and after a few months, they walk in saying: “I did it – I passed!”. In particular, I have seen children studying above their grade level in Maths and English, and this has not only improved their performance at school, it has increased their independence and their desire to attempt new challenges in their lives.

It is a brave new world we are living in, with COVID-19 taking us outside of our comfort zones and making us look at new ways of doing things, and in particular, new ways to stimulate our children. For a successful future, your child will need to be confident, independent, be able to adapt quickly to different environments, and have the discipline to persevere. This is what the Kumon Programme has to offer for your child’s success!

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
