About this centre

In-centre & Online Classes
Our focus at Strubens Valley is the individual student: discovering and nurturing their unlimited potential, giving them the ability to learn on their own, and thus increasing their motivation to succeed. With my team of professionals trained in the latest Kumon Methods, we plan to provide the best learning experience. Our goal is to create a safe, friendly environment for children of all ages and abilities to develop essential life skills and a positive attitude towards their studies. (Kumon is an excellent programme for adults who wish to develop their skills too!)

The centre has number boards, multiplication tables and spelling activities to enhance the students’ daily work, with a library to encourage a love for reading. We also communicate with parents regularly on their children’s development.

Your child will visit the centre twice a week for about half an hour per subject. Apart from centre days, there will be an appropriate amount of work to complete on a daily basis.

The Study Centre is a short travelling distance to numerous pre-schools, primary and high schools situated in the neighbourhood and is also located near the Strubens Valley Library. There is ample parking available in the Strubens Valley Shopping Centre and it has good security, making it a safe environment. Parents can wait at the Study Centre, or can conveniently shop at Spar, grab a coffee at Wild Bean Café, or even exercise at Curves Gym!

We look forward to seeing you and your child soon at the Strubens Valley Study Centre!

Hi, my name is Carla Selyer and I am the Instructor of the Kumon Strubens Valley Study Centre.

With long years of experience working in international organisations and running my own business before becoming a Kumon Instructor, I know what it takes to survive and thrive in business. It needs analytical skills - the foundation of these is Maths and English skills, which is what the Kumon programme provides. Skills in these two subjects support achievements in all the other subjects.

Going through the Kumon Programme myself has been enriching: it is a wonderful method to learn, building your ability gradually so that you can tackle advanced levels with ease.

I have also had the opportunity to work at a Kumon Centre. It has been rewarding to witness the transformation of children who come in lacking confidence in their ability and after a few months, they walk in saying: “I did it – I passed!” In particular, I have seen children studying above their grade level in Maths and English, and this has not only improved their performance at school, it has made it easier for their parents to oversee their work as they have become more independent learners.

For a successful future, your child will need to be confident, independent, be able to adapt quickly to different environments, and have the discipline to persevere. This is what the Kumon Programme has to offer for your child’s success.

I look forward to meeting you and your child soon at the Kumon Strubens Valley Study Centre!

Most Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
