About this centre

At Kumon Tzaneen, our aim is to discover and develop the potential of each learner to become an independent advanced learner. We are a life skills training centre that uses academic tools such as Mathematics and English to develop a learner’s full potential. We develop the learner’s potential in academics, work skill and attitude.
The Kumon programme has been proven successful for over 60 years. This unique programme enables each learner to self-learn by developing the discipline and attitude to continuously develop. The learner’s ability is individually assessed to ensure that we start at the right learning ability. Thereafter the learner will work with the instructor to develop the skill to independently explore and discover new ways to solve problems. The programme is structured in manageable, daily, self-learning sessions with two contact sessions per week with the instructor. The two sessions per week with the instructor guides and develops the learner to build a solid foundation for effective learning. The programme is tailored to the learner’s individual needs ensuring that the learner continues to develop study skills and confidence as they advance through the programme.
The centre offers a friendly environment where students work at their own level and pace.  Kumon Tzaneen caters for learners of all ages and abilities and accommodates learners from four years right up to adults.

About the Instructor

My name is Elise Knight, and I am the proud Instructor at Kumon Tzaneen.
When I was younger, I was in five different primary schools due to the nature of my father’s work. This made me quickly adaptable, and I found myself become confident in knowing and becoming more curious about the different things I had learned in each school along the way. We then settled in Pretoria for most of my high school days.
I always had this burning desire within me to train and to Instruct. I decided to complete a few short courses to make my dream come true.

I have also been blessed with three beautiful children. Two sons and my daughter being the youngest, who truly fill my heart with so much of joy and happiness!

My eldest son had a difficult childhood. He had medical complications as well as found it hard to cope at school. I have learned so much from him over the years. Patience and understanding but most of all, his love for learning at his own pace. This of course was before Kumon came to town. I found the right learning space to enrich and develop him holistically with this world-renowned programme.

I had great opportunities to work with many young learners and young adults in various sports and academic subjects. I trained, assisted, and instructed at normal schools as well as Schools for Special Needs Children and Young Adults.
The joy and happiness on the faces and in the eyes of children and parents are more precious than rubies!
By becoming a Kumon Instructor my aim is to sow the seed of hope into the hearts and souls of each individual and to cultivate the feeling of “I CAN DO IT” and “I DID IT”
After all, … “I DID IT!”

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
