We are located at Umhlanga Centre at 185 Ridge Road in Umhlanga Rocks. The Centre caters for all ages and has a dedicated Early Learner Section and a well-resourced library with interesting and exciting books from the Kumon Recommended Reading book list.

About the Instructor

My name is Anita Chetty.  I am a passionate, experienced and qualified educator, having dedicated 25 years to teaching and learning. As Head of Department, I had many opportunities as a leader, guide and mentor for developing, motivating and empowering educators and learners, developing individual learner support plans to measure performance, supervise and monitor educator programmes and classroom activities, and provide guidance on curriculum management.   My educational journey has afforded me the opportunity to interact and work with high school, primary school, remedial and special needs learners.  I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education, a Higher Diploma in Education and completed Certificate courses in Inclusive Education and Special Needs. 

I had heard many testimonies from family and friends about how successful the Kumon programme was and how it had benefited their children. I knew Kumon was the perfect next step for me as an instructor after I learned how well it aligned with my own beliefs and philosophy about developing self-learners.
The well designed, structured step-by-step format of the program is the perfect tool to assist in instilling advanced self-study habits and mastering of materials in all students. I had longed to run my own Kumon education franchise and thus grasped the opportunity to pursue my dream and join the Kumon family when it presented.
Today as the owner and instructor of the Kumon Maths and English Education Centre in Umhlanga, I continue to educate and make a meaningful, positive impact on students’ lives in this new chapter of my journey. 

Based on my extensive experience, observations and training in the Education sector, I believe that Kumon is the best investment a parent can make in their child's future or best gift to give to any child.  It provides the tools to develop potential that are awe -inspiring and skills that are life - changing.  Kumon certainly has vital life skills benefits such as enhances brain functioning, improves concentration and better time management.  It enables your child to master Maths concepts and applications, improves communication, comprehension and reading skills and provides a solid foundation to learning.  It enables your child to become accountable and maximise his/ her academic potential, and become an independent and confident, holistic learner.  The kumon learning programme is suited and adapted to meet every child's individual educational needs.
I find it extremely rewarding working with students and witnessing their improvements in their skills as they overcome many of their own learning challenges to become self-sustaining independent individuals.  I believe that every child can succeed in life if they have consistent support and encouragement, guidance and mentorship, quality teaching and instruction, and a warm, nurturing environment.

How long does study take?

Study takes around 30 minutes per subject a day, depending on age and level of the work. Currently, study may be In-Centre and/or at home with online or messaging support.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
