About our centre

At the Kumon Villeria Centre, we believe every child can succeed – when they are given the space to grow in their own way. We create a calm, supportive environment where students can develop their academic abilities at a pace that suits them. There is no pressure to rush or compete. Instead, each student follows an individualised learning path designed specifically for their current academic level, allowing us to develop their potential and allowing them to build confidence step by step.

Our focus goes beyond simply improving grades. Through the Kumon Mathematics and Reading Programmes, we develop the core skills that shape how a child learns for life. Mathematics strengthens problem-solving and logical thinking, while the reading programme develops comprehension, critical thinking, and the ability to process and retain information independently.

These are not just academic skills – they are life skills. A child who can confidently work through complex problems and understand what they read is better equipped for tests, exams, and future challenges. They become more independent, more focused, and more self-assured.

We also emphasize the importance of strong learning habits. A strong daily routine of doing mathematics and reading consistently can make a world of difference. Engaging with mathematics daily, even if it is just a small amount of time before studying for another subject, can improve focus, memory, and overall performance. Over time, students will begin to notice that they are not just keeping up, but often working comfortably above their grade level. Our goal is simple: to help each student discover their unique potential and develop the confidence and ability to go beyond what they thought was possible.

Carla Steyn

About your Instructor

Hi, my name is Carla Steyn. With over two years of experience working within Kumon centres, along with a background in reading therapy, tutoring, and early childhood development, I bring a well-rounded and personalised approach to education.

I strongly believe that every child learns differently, and that those differences should be supported, not criticised. My approach is rooted in understanding each student as an individual and helping them build confidence in the way they learn.

I’ve worked with students aged 6 to 18, helping them strengthen their reading, build confidence, and develop independent learning skills. During my time as a senior mathematics assistant in Kumon, I’ve seen first-hand the transformation that happens when a child begins to believe in their own ability.

Watching a student move from “I don’t understand” to “I can do this on my own” is what drives me. My goal is to create a calm, supportive environment where every student feels capable, confident, and motivated to reach their full potential.

Because when a child gains confidence in how they learn, everything changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
