About our centre

The Africa Virtual Centre is a fully online Kumon Centre, designed to make quality education accessible to children anywhere in Africa.

All study is done digitally through Kumon Connect using tablets or iPads, with students working using styluses. This means children are still writing by hand, just as they would on paper, allowing us to continue developing strong handwriting skills, accuracy, and focus—not typing in answers. Centre sessions take place live via Zoom. This flexible virtual setup allows students to learn from the comfort and safety of their own homes, while still receiving structured guidance, support, and encouragement from their Kumon Instructor.

We offer both the Kumon Maths Programme and the Kumon English (Native Language) Programme. Each child progresses through the programme at a pace that is tailored to their individual ability and needs, ensuring that learning is neither rushed nor limited. This personalised approach allows every child the opportunity to grow, build confidence, and experience success.

The Africa Virtual Centre provides a safe, supportive learning environment where children are encouraged to focus, develop independence, and take responsibility for their own learning. Through the proven Kumon method, students build strong academic foundations while also developing essential life skills such as concentration, perseverance, time management, and self-discipline.

At the Africa Virtual Centre, we strive to discover the potential of every student and support them in developing the skills needed to study at an international standard for their age. Through consistent self-study and guided instruction, we help children not only improve academically but also grow into confident, capable, and independent learners prepared for the future.

Darienne Abrahams

About your Instructor

My name is Darienne Abrahams, and I am the Instructor at the Africa Virtual Centre.

I have always had a deep love for education and for working with children. My career began as an au pair, where the children I cared for were enrolled in Kumon. Watching their growth firsthand showed me just how powerful the right educational support can be. It was during this time that I truly saw how education, when done correctly, can shape confidence, independence, and a child’s belief in their own ability.

I later went on to become an English teacher, continuing my journey in education. Even so, Kumon never left my mind. The proven structure, focus on self-learning, and ability to meet each child at their own level stood out to me as a method that truly develops learners—not just academically, but personally as well.

I strongly believe that our future lies in the children of today, and that education through Kumon equips them with essential life skills that will help shape their lives and the communities they will one day lead. Kumon can cater to any child, at any ability level, and I am committed to supporting and developing every child who joins my centre.

At the Africa Virtual Centre, my goal is to help each student discover their potential, grow in confidence, and develop the skills they need to succeed—both in their studies and in life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
