About this centre

The current Welkom Kumon Centre started in 2014, but was established by the former Instructor over a decade ago.

The Welkom Centre has study areas split by age groups: younger students and older students. Current student ages range from preschoolers of four years of age to adults.  Kumon truly does cater for students of all ages and abilities.

The centre has a library facility with a selection of books which will be expanded over time.

The Welkom Centre currently employs three assistants to support student development.

About the Instructor

Before becoming the Instructor of the Welkom Centre, I was employed as assistant in the centre by the former instructor for two years whilst completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Education.

I hold a B.Com degree and have worked in the accounting field for many years. Working with numbers has given me a deep and abiding love for mathematics, even though as a child I was one of those students who was ‘left behind’ by the school system.
My experience as a Kumon assistant cemented my desire to help children. My personal belief in leaving no child behind was perfectly aligned with Kumon’s stated purpose of developing the potential of every child.

In the centre, I watched as children who were struggling with maths and/or English when they started the programme, who were shy and uncertain of themselves, changed before my very eyes into confident learners with a budding desire to know more.

I try to stimulate learning and curiosity in my students as much as possible. Children are all scientists at heart. They observe, they question and they experiment. These are the tools they use to become  academically astute, and I believe they are also the tools that lead them to fulfilling their potential as people and as citizens of the world.

In the centre, you will often hear me repeat the following phrase: This is a stress-free zone. I prefer a  learning environment where children feel comfortable and calm; this is conducive to study and to building self-esteem.

How long does study take?

Study takes around 30 minutes per subject a day, depending on age and level of the work. Currently, study may be In-Centre and/or at home with online or messaging support.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
