The Beacon Bay Study Centre operates at 28 Avalon Road, Beacon Bay, across the road from Beaconhurst Primary school, and it provides a safe learning environment for the students. There is ample free parking close to the Centre. The Centre is approximately 100 square meters in size, with a ''buzz-in-buzz-out'' system creating a safe learning area.

Instructor Irma Barnard’s experience as an educator ensures a professionally run study centre where all students are encouraged to reach their full potential. The centre caters for children of all ages and abilities and has students ranging in age from 3 years to Grade 10.

The Beacon Bay team is comprised of dedicated assistants who are passionate about children. Through regular training they effectively support Early Learners, newly enrolled students as well as high level maths and English students.

The centre is open four days a week, four hours per day. Students attend the centre twice a week during centre operating hours, for ± 35minutes per subject.

There is a lovely waiting area at the study centre for parents who are waiting for their children, as well as the shopping centre and coffee shops nearby.

About the Instructor

My name is Irma Barnard and I have been a Kumon Instructor since the 1st of April 2019. I am a qualified Foundation Phase educator (Grade R – 3). I have seven years teaching experience, teaching at two schools in East London as a Grade 2 teacher as well as a Music teacher. I have a great passion to assist our youth to excel in all they do. I have always wanted to find something to assist children in bettering their future. Kumon has opened my eyes to seeing a greater picture of developing a student to their full potential in a way I never experienced as a student. I assisted at the Beacon Bay Kumon Study Centre for about two months before taking over the centre after my formal Kumon training.

My career as an educator complements my role as a Kumon Instructor because it provides me with knowledge and understanding of the school curriculum and the difficulties learners and teachers experience in the ever changing school environment. It gives me great excitement to use the Kumon method as a tool to guide students to become independent self-learners and to reach their full potential whilst developing their ability in maths and English.

I have always had a passion for developing children and enjoy the challenge of bringing out the best in every individual. It gives me great joy to see students being able to grasp any topic above their grade with confidence. The most rewarding part of being a Kumon Instructor is to be able to see each student progress and seeing their faces light up when they have achieved something amazing.

Kumon allows me to keep growing as an Instructor through learning from both my students as well as other Instructors worldwide. Through continuous training my staff and I keep developing our instructional skills so that our students can benefit more each day.

Popular Questions

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
